Singapore names panda cub ‘Le Le’
The first giant panda cub born in Singapore has finally been given a name – Le Le. In a public poll, Singaporeans chose the name which takes inspiration from the city state’s old Chinese name Shi Le Po. Le Le was born on August 14, 2021, to parents Kai Kai and Jia Jia, who were loaned to Singapore by China as a symbol of friendship in 2012.

New mother Yuan Yuan gave birth to the healthy female cub at Taipei zoo on June 28, 2020, after five hours of labour. Parents Yuan Yuan and her partner Tuan Tuan have been top attractions on the self-ruled island since they arrived as gifts from the Chinese mainland in 2008 as symbols of then warm relations across the Taiwan Strait.

A Canadian zoo has decided to send two adult giant pandas back to China because the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted essential deliveries of fresh bamboo. The Calgary Zoo in Alberta made the decision after flights cancelled to fight the spread of Covid-19 also cut off their supply of bamboo for pandas Er Shun and Da Mao.
