More than 56,000 displaced as Mount Mayon volcano erupts

Mount Mayon, the Philippines' most active volcano, erupted this week, spewing lava fountains 700 metres above its crater.

While the eruption provided a dazzling show, 56,000 villagers who live around the volcano’s base have been forced to flee from their homes. Twelve thousand of those residents had returned home just last week, as the volcano’s rumblings had temporarily eased.
