Himalayan glacier breaks in northern India, leaving at least 170 missing in deadly floods

At least 14 people were killed and 170 listed as missing after a large piece of a Himalayan glacier broke off on February 7, 2021. The affected section of the Nanda Devi glacier is located in the Tapovan area of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It crashed into a dam and triggered a massive flood of water and debris. The Rishi Ganga hydropower plant at Raini Chak Lata village, Chamoli district, was destroyed in the accident. A search operation was launched to look for survivors, while residents living in the area were evacuated.
