New Delhi car park turned into crematorium as India deals with catastrophic Covid-19 crisis

Avery Choi

Funeral service providers are being overwhelmed by Covid-19 victims as a surge in new cases sweeps across India. Hospitals are struggling to handle the new coronavirus infections, and many families of those who have died are turning to makeshift facilities for burials and cremations. In the capital New Delhi, funeral pyres were set up in a car park at a crematorium to handle the overflow. On April 27, 2021, more than 320,000 new infections were recorded, and the nation’s total number of deaths reached nearly 200,000. Health experts believe the reported figures are far less than the actual number of victims.
