Former Philippine president Benigno Aquino dies at 61

Former Philippine president Benigno Aquino III died at the age of 61 on June 24, 2021. His sister Aurora “Pinky” Aquino-Abellada confirmed his death and said he had died of renal disease secondary to diabetes.

Aquino was president from 2010 to 2016, overseeing the Philippines’ fastest period of economic growth since the 1970s and challenging China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea before a United Nations-backed tribunal.
