Pakistan opens first school for transgender women

Jasmine Tse

Pakistan has opened its first school for transgender women in the country’s Punjab province. Education minister Murad Raas vowed to provide “education for everyone”, saying that the school aims to help transgender youth pursue better job opportunities later in life. The country’s first Islamic religious school for transgenders also opened earlier this year in the capital Islamabad. The initiative comes as transgender people remain marginalised and face discrimination in education and jobs.
