Taliban whitewashes and repaints murals and colourful images on Kabul city walls
The Taliban has ordered the whitewashing of murals and images on walls around the Afghan capital Kabul and replacing them with slogans supporting the group’s ideology. Images carrying political messages and dedications to noteworthy people had adorned the walls, which were criticised as structures built to protect the rich and powerful. Among the murals removed was a portrait of respected Japanese aid worker Dr Tetsu Nakamura, who was killed in an ambush in eastern Afghanistan in 2019.
