Taiwan’s opposition lawmakers brawl over government’s Covid-19 response

Carol Mang

A brawl broke out on the floor of Taiwan's legislature on September 28, 2021, after opposition lawmakers interrupted an annual address by the chamber's head, Su Tseng-chang. While Su was delivering the speech on the government's performance, the lawmakers rushed to the podium, sparking a melee during which several politicians were shoved to the ground and bottles of water were poured onto some members. Lawmakers from the main opposition Kuomintang party broke through a line formed by members of Su's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, as they shouted calls for the speaker to resign over the government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 800 people died during the island’s most recent surge of cases from May until June 2021.
