Okinawa mulls emergency measures as Covid-19 outbreak linked to US military bases

A Covid-19 outbreak traced back to US military personnel stationed in the Japanese island of Okinawa may send the prefecture into lockdown. At least 980 people tested positive for the virus on January 6, 2022, – a record for Okinawa. US forces have been accused of flouting anti-Covid measures, including mask-wearing. Beijing criticised US troops for setting a “bad example” in the fight against Covid-19. The US military has vowed to implement tougher measures to help contain the outbreak.
