Japan holds annual ‘Coming of Age Day’ celebrations as Covid-19 cases climb

Japan celebrates Seijin-no-hi, or Coming of Age Day, on the second Monday of January every year. Young people dressed in traditional kimonos take part in the ceremony to celebrate turning 20, signalling their passage into adulthood. This year’s celebrations marked a small step towards normalcy in cities like Tokyo, where the coronavirus pandemic left nearly all Seijin-no-hi events cancelled last year.
