Eastern Myanmar sees fighting on a scale unseen for decades, according to relief organisation

Harvey Kong

Fighting in Myanmar's eastern state of Kayah, also known as Karenni, has reached a scale that has not been seen in decades, according to a humanitarian relief organisation. David Eubank, director of the Free Burma Rangers, said some of the worst battles in the country since World War II have taken place, including frequent attacks using military fighter jets, helicopters and mortar rounds. In a February 24, 2022, report by a state-run newspaper, Myanmar's military admitted to using air strikes and heavy artillery to clear out what it described as “terrorist groups” near the Kayah state capital.
