Liberal MP Fiona Martin accused of confusing two Asian-Australian politicians

Bryan Wood

Australian Liberal parliamentarian Fiona Martin has been accused of confusing two female Asian-Australian candidates after she suggested her opponent, Labor’s Sally Sitou, had lost preselection for candidacy in a Sydney suburb to Labor frontbencher Kristina Keneally. During a heated clash on radio, Martin suggested Sitou had tried to run in the Western Sydney seat of Fowler but was kicked out. In fact, Labor frontbencher Kristina Keneally was parachuted in to contest the seat, against Tu Le, a former Labor member of staff and lawyer of Vietnamese heritage, in the Fowler preselection race. Fowler boasts a proud Vietnamese community.  Sitou is Australian born and of Chinese heritage. The South China Morning Post asks Asian Australians why this incident offended them.
