Beheading of Hindu tailor in India amid sectarian violence over Prophet Mohammed remarks
Thousands of people joined a protest in the Indian city of Udaipur on June 30, 2022, following the murder of a Hindu tailor the previous day. Two Muslim men in the western state of Rajastanare have been arrested after allegedly beheading Kanhaiya Lal and posting a video of the act online. The victim reportedly had shared a social media post supporting sensitive comments about the Prophet Mohammed made by Nupur Sharma, a spokeswoman for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ruling-party official’s remarks during a televised debate in late May sparked protests in India and across the wider Islamic world. Udaipur has been placed under a partial curfew and mobile internet services are cut in other parts of the state amid fears of more sectarian violence.
