Japan holds funeral service for former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
Crowds have been gathering to pay their last respects to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the capital Tokyo, where a funeral service was held on July 12, 2022. Funeral attendance was limited to family members and people who were close to the former leader. After the service, Abe’s body was driven past areas and buildings that he was associated with, including the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) headquarters, the prime minister’s office and the parliament building. Abe, who will be cremated at the Kirigaya Funeral Hall, was shot dead on July 8 in the city of Nara by a lone gunman while campaigning for his party for the July 10 upper house election, which the Liberal Democratic Party won by a landslide.
