Japan avalanche kills 2 foreign tourists, including US skier Kyle Smaine

The bodies of two foreign men have been recovered the day after they went missing during an avalanche in the village of Otari in Japan’s northern prefecture of Nagano. US skier Kyle Smaine was named as one of the two victims killed in the January 29, 2023, incident which caught a group of 13 skiers and snowboarders who were reportedly outside patrolled areas of a ski resort. An avalanche warning remains in place for the area after days of heavy snow.
