Rio Tinto apologises as lost radioactive capsule found in Australian outback
Australian officials have recovered a tiny radioactive capsule that had gone missing in the Australian outback in mid-January 2023. The device had apparently fallen off a truck owned by mining company Rio Tinto while in transit to Perth from a mine in Western Australia. Senior company official Simon Trott apologised for the panic caused. Despite its small size, officials were concerned it could have been picked up by unknowing passers-by. The unit emits the equivalent of 10 X-rays worth of radiation an hour.
