Nickel boom in Indonesia threatens farmers’ livelihood and natural environment

Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer. The Southeast Asian country has seen a huge rush of domestic and foreign enterprises eager to mine the critical component used in electric vehicle batteries. In areas such as Wawonii, in the resource-rich Indonesian island of Sulawesi, local residents and rights groups say the nickel boom is threatening villagers’ livelihood and harming the environment.
