Thailand’s two major opposition parties were expected to form a coalition after national election results left them in a neck-and-neck race. On May 15, 2023, the Election Commission forecast the progressive Move Forward Party (MFP) would win 151 out of a total of 400 constituency seats, just ahead of the populist Pheu Thai party which earned 141 seats. A coalition would end a decade of rule by the nation’s military-backed government, but decisions about who will head the next government are not expected until July.
