The Philippines condemned the Chinese coastguard on August 6, 2023, for allegedly firing water cannons at its vessels in the disputed South China Sea. The Philippine boats were on a resupply mission for Filipino military personnel stationed at Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands. China’s coastguard countered that it had implemented necessary controls in accordance with its law to deter Philippine ships, which it accused of trespassing and carrying illegal building materials.
