The Japanese tradition of ukai, which uses trained seabirds to catch ayu or sweetfish, is under increasing threat from environmental changes. Some are trying to keep the 1,300-year-old practice alive. But Yoichiro Adachi, an 18th-generation cormorant fisherman, says a shrinking catch has forced many to look for other ways to supplement their income.
