Grilled eel, a popular summer delicacy in Japan, has been blamed for a department store food poisoning incident that left one elderly woman dead and more than 140 other people ill. The president of Keikyu Department Store said on July 29, 2024, that an independently operated food stand set up in the establishment had sold customers takeaway lunch boxes days before they began reporting symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea.
