A search is under way in Japan’s Saitama prefecture after a truck and its driver plunged into a sinkhole that formed at a road junction in the city of Yashio on January 28, 2025. The 74-year-old driver was still missing three days later, as the hole grew in size and a second sinkhole formed nearby. Authorities have asked area residents to reduce water consumption to avoid further destabilising the site and there are fears that other new holes could form.
