Former Japanese boxer Iwao Hakamada spent 47 years on death row after being wrongly convicted of a quadruple murder in 1966. On March 24, 2025, the Shizuoka District Court awarded him US$1.45 million in compensation for his wrongful imprisonment. Last year, the same court ruled that Hakamada was not guilty after a retrial found that police had tampered with evidence.
