Japan and the Philippines have agreed to advance security and economic ties amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The deal was reached during a visit to Manila by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The Japanese leader held talks with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr on April 29, 2025. Ishiba's visit to the Philippines comes at a crucial time, as both countries face growing concerns over regional security and China's assertiveness in the South China Sea, while navigating global trade tensions sparked by sweeping US tariffs and increased friction between Washington and Beijing.
