Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to resign by the end of the month
Local media have reported Ishiba will meet with fellow party members soon to discuss how he will take responsibility in the upper house election defeat
Japanese media have reported that Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will announce his resignation by the end of August 2025, following his party’s bruising defeat in recent upper house elections, where it lost its majority. Ishiba previously vowed he would stay in power despite the results which have caused growing discontent within his Liberal Democratic Party. This also comes as Japan just finalised a trade deal with its ally, the US, lowering tariffs rates for Japanese goods from 25% to 15%.
