For centuries, Japanese men dressed only in mawashi loincloths have gathered in locations around the country to take part in the annual “naked festival”. Some events in rural areas feature traditional battles that play out in frigid mud. Most participants emerge unfazed, but covered in grime that is said to ward off evil and ensure good health.
