China seeks to stay relevant in Korean peninsula affairs

Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and later had a phone call with US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang visited Japan for talks with Japanese and South Korean officials about the situation on the Korean peninsula. As North Korea pledges denuclearisation and works towards direct negotiations with the US, China is looking to maintain a key role in the Korean affairs.
