Li Peng: former Chinese premier and Tiananmen hardliner dies at age 90

Former Chinese premier Li Peng has died at age 90. He rose through the ranks and gained power in the energy industry after Deng Xiaoping became paramount leader in the late 1970s. Li succeeded Zhao Ziyang and served as the premier from 1987 to 1998. He was seen as a hardliner in the Communist Party for crushing the democracy movement in 1989.
