China hits back at US after Pompeo says most of Beijing’s claims in South China Sea are illegal

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on July 14, 2020, that Washington is disrupting regional peace and stability in the South China Sea after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejected Beijing's territorial claims in the disputed waters. Pompeo issued an online statement the previous day saying there was no legal basis for China's claims in the area and accused Beijing of using intimidatory tactics against other claimant states.
