Beijing insists on ‘1992 consensus’ in response to first remarks by Taiwan’s new mainland chief
The Chinese mainland’s central government is insisting that the “1992 consensus” is key to easing cross-strait tensions with Taiwan. A spokesman with Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Ma Xiaoguang, made the remarks on February 25, 2022, the day after the first statement by Taipei’s new head of the mainland affairs council Chiu Tai-shan. Chiu said the mainland’s “new interpretation” of the consensus had left the island with little room to manoeuvre and made it difficult for the Taiwan public to accept. Ma also accused Taipei of politicising the mainland’s vaccine offer.
