Streets and trains empty in central Chinese city of Anyang as Covid-19 lockdown begins

Over 5 million residents of the Chinese city of Anyang have been placed under lockdown to fight the spread of Covid-19. The measures were taken after two cases involving the Omicron variant were confirmed on January 10, 2022. Residents of the city in China’s central province of Henan were ordered to stay home and transport links were suspended. China has been battling coronavirus outbreaks with its strict “zero-Covid'' strategy. According to the Chinese National Health Commission, 43 of the country’s 124 coronavirus infections reported on January 12 were in Anyang.
