‘Don’t help a villain’: China urges Japan not to follow US’ lead on tech isolation

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang told his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi on April 2, 2023, to not follow the United States’ lead in trying to contain China. Qin was commenting during Hayashi’s visit to China, the first by a Japanese foreign minister in three years. Just days before Hayashi arrived in Beijing, Tokyo announced plans to restrict semiconductor equipment exports to China, following months of American lobbying.
