In a country marred by an uneven post-pandemic recovery, China’s youth are increasingly disillusioned by the gap between workplace expectations and a lack of job opportunities, with the youth jobless rate reaching a record high in June 2023. Some Generation Z jobseekers have opted out of the demands of corporate life and are instead focused on self-expression, part of a movement known as “lying flat”, or trading the hustle for comfort.
