Trump says he can see himself dealing directly with Xi on US-China trade deal details

US President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on May 13, 2025, that he could see himself talking directly with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on the final details of a trade deal. China and the United States agreed on May 12 to sharply roll back tariffs for 90 days, from an eye-watering US levy of 145 per cent that Trump imposed on his April 2 “Liberation Day”, and down from Chinese levels of 125 per cent. In the interview with Fox News, Trump alluded to a trade agreement potentially being similar to one the US reached with Britain, which he has touted as a model for the kind of “fair” deal he wants from China.
