Indian villagers resist mega dam meant to counter China water threat

When workers for India’s largest hydropower company moved survey equipment to a prospective dam site in Arunachal Pradesh in May, enraged villagers vandalised machinery, demolished a nearby bridge, and ransacked police tents guarding the operation. The resistance underscores growing tensions as India rushes to fast-track its own mega-dam project in response to fears that a planned Chinese hydropower dam in Tibet could reduce water flows on a major river by up to 85 per cent during the dry season, according to four sources and a government analysis seen by Reuters.
