A sudden blizzard struck the high-altitude regions of Tibet and Qinghai in western China on October 4, 2025. Hundreds of hikers were left stranded at altitudes as high as 4,900m (16,000ft) on Mount Everest. Rescuers and local residents have evacuated hundreds of trekkers on the eastern slopes of the mountain. At least one person reportedly died of hypothermia and altitude sickness, according to state media.
