China’s third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, went into service on November 5, 2025, at a grand ceremony in Sanya, Hainan, according to state media reports. The vessel is the PLA Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, displacing over 80,000 tonnes. Launched in June 2022, the Fujian features electromagnetic catapults and arresting gear capable of launching aircraft with heavier weapons payloads and more fuel for extended range. Nuclear-powered ships were previously thought to be the only type of aircraft carrier that could generate enough electricity to launch an aircraft using such technology. The commissioning of the Fujian is set to bolster China’s blue-water capabilities amid tensions in the western Pacific.
