WHO: Omicron still dangerous especially for unvaccinated though it causes less severe disease
While the Omicron variant of the coronavirus causes less severe disease than the Delta strain, it remains dangerous particularly for the unvaccinated, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on January 12, 2022. The worldwide number of infections increased by 55 per cent in the week leading up to January 9 from a week earlier to what was by far the most cases reported in a single week. Speaking at a news briefing, the WHO chief warned that if the rate of transmission was not curtailed, there was a greater risk of another variant emerging that could be even more transmissible, and more deadly, than Omicron.
