Medical waste generated by the Covid-19 pandemic is overwhelming Indonesia’s landfills.
Surgical masks, personal protective equipment (PPE) and syringes can be found mixed with regular trash in Burangkeng, one of the largest waste disposal sites in the country. According to the United Nations, medical waste in the capital Jakarta has soared more than 500 per cent during the Covid-19 pandemic.
