Hong Kong based American lawyer John Clancey stays optimistic after national security law arrest
American lawyer John Clancey said he was “very surprised” when Hong Kong authorities arrested him under the city’s national security law on January 6, 2021. The Hong Kong-based human rights lawyer was arrested along with more than 50 former opposition lawmakers and activists who have been accused of a plot to “overthrow” the government.
Clancey came to Hong Kong in 1968 as a Catholic priest before he left the priesthood and married in 1985. Since 1997, he has worked as a solicitor in Hong Kong and is a partner in the law firm Ho Tse Wai & Partners, which was also raided on January 6.
