Hong Kong’s Cheung Chau Bun Festival begins with a parade

Kayla Chan

The annual Bun Festival opened with a colourful parade on Hong Kong’s Cheung Chau Island on May 15, 2024. The event featured lion dances and parades and later in the evening there will be a competitive scramble up a tower covered with “lucky” buns. The afternoon Piu Sik parade involves children masquerading as deities or public figures carried through the streets, with costume choices often reflecting issues of the day. One young performer was dressed as an Environmental Protection Department officer, in what was seen as commentary about Hong Kong's controversial waste charging scheme plans.
