Janet Kung is a two-time “Bun Queen”, having twice won Hong Kong’s iconic annual Cheung Chau bun-scrambling competition. Kung’s goal in 2025 is to win a third title and honours as “queen of bun queens”. The contest has roots in the Taoist religion and is organised during the bun festival on Cheung Chau island. The traditional event is believed to have first been held to celebrate the end of a plague. Kung’s bun-scrambling skills are related to the fact that she is also Hong Kong’s only professional female ice climbing athlete, who in 2025 was ranked sixth in the world.
