Mainland Chinese drivers hit bumps on Hong Kong roads in first week of new travel scheme

Mainland Chinese drivers have been running into trouble with unfamiliar roads in Hong Kong since they have been allowed to drive in the city under a new southbound drivers scheme that took effect on December 23, 2025. The arrangements allow for 100 drivers from the mainland to travel to the city daily for stays of up to three days. But it has not been smooth sailing for some motorists who are unaccustomed to the city’s traffic rules.
