How people in northern and southern China enjoy dumplings for Lunar New Year

Dumplings are essential to most Chinese people during the Lunar New Year, but they have different meanings in the north and south.

For most Chinese people, having a bowl of hot dumplings during the Lunar New Year symbolises good fortune. But there’s a difference between the type of dumplings enjoyed in the north vs the south. In northern China, jiaozi is made with a wheat-flour wrapper and savoury fillings. In the south, tang yuan is made with glutinous rice flour and can be enjoyed both sweet and savoury.
