US government documents about the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein show he had connections with several people from or previously based in Hong Kong. Emails showed the disgraced American financier had a close relationship with a Hong Kong academic who at the time worked at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Epstein also arranged a cultural exchange with another academic and helped an American scientist who was based in the city in the 2010s secure millions of dollars in grants from the Hong Kong government. Epstein was arrested by US federal agents in 2019 on charges of sex trafficking minors. He died while he was in custody awaiting trial. During his career as a financier, he ingratiated himself with the world’s rich and powerful, including entertainers, politicians and businesspeople.
