What do we know so far about the Covid-19 variants?

As many countries continue to struggle with rising numbers of Covid-19 infections and deaths, the UN World Health Organization has classified four variants of the disease as a cause for concern. The variants have been shown to have higher transmissibility or come with more severe symptoms. But it’s still not clear how these variants emerged and exactly how much more deadly they are.
