Released in 2012 by Japanese gaming giant Sega, the arcade video game maimai is often referred to affectionately as a washing machine by fans, owing to its unusual shape. The game is very popular in Hong Kong, where traditional arcade-style venues, which have largely disappeared from other places, still exist. Hong Kong university student Leung Wang-hoi started playing in April 2022, enchanted by the game’s unique eight-button design.
