Chinese 5G remote-control system takes the wheel at Shanghai Auto Show

A remote-control system that uses advanced 5G mobile networks to operate a car has taken pole position in the race for attention at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.

China’s state-owned telecoms company China Mobile showcased the autonomous vehicle technology – which allowed a driver at the Shanghai show to take the wheel and control a car more than 1,000km (620 miles) away in the capital Beijing.

Industry watchers said the technology shows how China is taking a leading role in the application of 5G in automotive design.

The Shanghai Auto Show, which is held every two years, was underway April 16-25, 2019.
