Hundreds injured in violent clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians near Al-Aqsa mosque

Tensions over a plan to evict Palestinian families from land claimed by Israeli settlers boiled over in violence on May 8-9, 2021, at one of Jerusalem’s holiest sites. Nearly 200 Palestinians were injured by Monday morning in ongoing clashes with Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa mosque, near Jerusalem’s walled Old City. A court ruling over the evictions scheduled for May 10, has now been postponed. The weekend violence capped off a tense Ramadan after Israeli police erected barricades in a bid to stop gatherings after iftar, the meal breaking the fast during the holy Muslim month.
