UN passes resolution on Afghanistan despite China and Russia abstentions
The United Nation Security Council passed a draft resolution on August 30, 2021, to urge the Taliban to adhere to its commitments to provide safe passage for people wanting to leave Afghanistan, allow humanitarian groups to access the country and to protect the human rights of women and minorities in the country. The resolution was passed with 13 votes in favour and no objections, but China and Russia abstained. Russia’s ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the resolution did not include enough about pushing Afghanistan’s new rules to fight terrorism.
